RE: Mercedes - the source8 Jul 2020 19:45
It reminded me of this extract from a canncord (back when joint brokers wrote notes) note in March 2019.
"Mercedes has embraced voice, alongside for example hand gesture, as one of several
different HMI options, with which to interact with its all-new MBUX Interior Assistant
infotainment system, introduced with the launch of the new CLA class. According to
our industry contacts, the fact that the gesture control option functions via a camera
In the centre console and works in the dark, requiring the presence of a near-IR type
light source, implies the presence of an interior cabin sensor and algorithmic
processing. This is well within the application spectrum of a company that can
perform far more complex eye tracking, such as Seeing Machines.
Furthermore, we
know that Xilinx (Seeing Machines’ Fovio chip partner) is involved in MBUX as per its
developer community forum/blog (12 Dec 2018) and subsequently telegraphed to the
outside world at CES 2019 (“Taking center-stage with Daimler”, 14 Jan 2019): The same vehicle can expect to have full DMS within the instrument cluster by around
2021/2 suggesting not one but two in-cabin awareness systems per car (we had not
previously considered an attach rate of more than one). Indeed, before then, it is
widely reported in the motoring media (including for example online portaltopspeed.com: “Lucky number seven for the Sonderklasse” Feb 14, 2019 ), that the
upcoming 2020 S-class will feature both:
? DMS, supporting semi-autonomous functionality (“Drive Pilot”)
? Enriched infotainment features using a camera system (ie MBUX)
Mercedes is seeking consistency with the MBUX interface through time and across
models in the range (starting with the new A-class), delivering a consistent customer
interaction layer. Might this stance also extend to its DMS system supplier base?"
