Ex-state minister Nasrul Hamid’s 4 apartments, 3 cars seized; 70 bank accounts frozen

A court has ordered the seizure of four apartments in Dhaka, and three cars that belong to former state minister for power, energy and mineral resources Nasrul Hamid.

The court also ordered the freezing of 70 bank accounts belonging to Nasrul Hamid, which contain Tk 379.6 million, according to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

One of the apartments is situated at Priyoprangon in Dhaka’s Poribagh, while the three others are in Banani’s PP Tower. These structures are valued at Tk 8.5 million.

Future strategies for coal extraction:

Bangladesh establishes sprawling open-pit operations to develop local coal extraction for energy security and crisis avoidance. According to data from the Geological Survey of Bangladesh (GSB), Bangladesh has 7,823 million tons of coal reserves, with an estimated market value of $1.3 trillion.

A JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) presentation indicated that the coal reserves in five mines are equivalent to 200 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of gas.

The use of coal in power generation is steadily increasing. As per the government's master plan, 10,000–11,000 MW of electricity will be produced from coal shortly, requiring large coal imports. This will demand significant foreign exchange spending, which may exceed $6 billion annually at current international coal prices.

Just for clarification, if the caretaker system is reinstated, the interim government would be legally required to conduct elections within the specified 90-day period.…

December polls demand: BNP eyes joint movement with allies

Frustrated by the interim government's failure to clarify the election roadmap, the BNP is re-engaging with political parties, including Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, to come up with a movement strategy to push for polls in December.

Starting today, BNP will hold a series of meetings with like-minded parties that previously participated in joint movements. Separate talks will also be held with Jamaat, which BNP earlier said would not be a part of its electoral alliance.

Proposals to constitution reform commission: 22 out of 35 parties want caretaker govt system

As many as 35 political parties have sought a wide range of reforms to the constitution but one demand -- the reinstatement of the caretaker government system -- stands out with 22 of them vouching for it.

The caretaker government with non-partisan administration was introduced after the fall of dictator HM Ershad in 1990 as an ad hoc system and was incorporated into the constitution through the 13th amendment in 1996. It was abolished in 2011 through the 15th amendment.

Political parties that back the caretaker system are BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, Jatiya Nagorik Committee, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (Bashod), Jatiyatabadi Samamona Jote, Bangladesh Jashod, Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist), Bangladesher Samajtantrik Party (BSP), Bangladesher Biplabi Communist League, Bangladesh Labour Party, both factions of Gono Odhikar Parishad, Nagorik Oikya, Jaitya Party (Kazi Zafar), Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP), Ganosamhati Andolon, Rastro Sangskar Andolon, Revolutionary Workers Party of Bangladesh, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), Khelafat Majlish and Bangladesh Muslim League.

Scrap the price increase on gas and soya beans and hold the elections as early as possible, is the request by more political parties…..

Different political parties on Friday at separate rallies protested at interim government’s decision to increase gas prices in industries.

They also protested at hikes in prices of soya bean oil.

The interim government has recently increased 33 per cent of gas price in industries and also increased Tk 18 per litre in soya bean oil.

He called on the interim government to scrap the decisions and hold the next general election as early as possible.

Govt must hold dialogue over elections, and avoid risks of conflict

The Army Chief General Waker-uz-Zaman has said elections will be held before December. His statement implies the army is tired of providing security assistance to the civil administration, weakened after 5 August last year. Indeed, the army should not be involved in maintaining internal law and order for a prolonged period; it has other duties to perform. The government must bear in mind these facts.

Recently, Jamaat leaders have also met BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in London, an act I believe signals the two political forces are trying to bridge gaps. If Jamaat and BNP join forces to wage demonstrations, demanding elections, the interim government would be in deeper troubles.
