RE: Teesta good for Phulbari ? Part 1 of 227 Aug 2025 10:51
While we are having a breather, I thought it may be worth reposting this post from Pappiklon, because it sums up the whole situation perfectly imo!
Is the implementation of the Teesta Project good for the Phulbari Project – an emphatic yes.
I have a ‘theory’ about what is going on in the background. The Interim government has said it was going to steer clear of implementing major political projects, and whilst they would recommend to the future government they wouldn’t implement, yet here we are with Teesta being given the go ahead. The 2 largest political parties are in favour of this going ahead and we have seen no detraction from them on the implementation of the project, is there a major rush for this too happen, well it’s been discussed for years with no action so why now? With Yunus setting it in motion, and it is a big political deal, it will mitigate fall out on Indian relations for the next government, and there will be repercussions from India who have basically been diverting and taking part of the countries previously agreed share of the water for years and don’t want that to change. Chinas presence along the river creates an element of security for Bangladesh, note articles in the BD press on airfields and military bases being built.
Likewise the open pit mine at Phulbari is one of those things where Political Parties don’t want to risk any controversy going into the election so they will not refer to it by name, but again those 2 main political parties have said they will utilise the countries own energy resources but have not been specific on where. Well the only place that has the ability for sure to provide that in the tenure of the next government is Phulbari, the other coalfields all have major issues not the least of which is the lack of feasibility studies and even if they were practical wouldn’t produce affordable coal in the next 5 years. (bara has yet to do new feasibility studies on open pit, I know from reading their annual report that would take several years in itself)
The Interim Governments Energy Advisor is pro Mining at Phulbari and we know from what he has said, and his colleagues too, that they are preparing a report for the next government on the way forward in utilising the countries coal resources. We know the incoming government, no matter which party is going to go for this, I would strongly suggest that the company is including both those main parties in discussions that take place between themselves, Power China and the Interim government - I have no doubt they are taking place.
Those who take the time to read the articles on here and have been researching this for years know the above is true.
