douve - yes that is correct., but you don't neccesarily have to transfer the cash to the ISA, you can just use some thats already in there (if there is any) if you want

I agree that if it was a new ISA then you could only do a max. of 20K but there is nothing stopping you from using all of your previous years of contributions and or gains to satisfy a bed and ISA.

I think what is confusing some people is the term 'bed and isa'

A bed and ISA is not a transfer as you can't transfer shares into an ISA. They always have to be sold first and then you just re-buy them in your ISA account. you can do it on the same day or a few days later or a few weeks later (it's still a bed and isa)

IF you wait for 30 days then you can reset the CGT base on it as well, so sometimes worth waiting 30 days or more if you have CGT implications (as long as you don't think the price will rise in the interim)

You can get your broker to automate it for you but they will still always sell the shares first and then simply buy some more in your ISA (usually with a much lower spread available to private investors.

A bed and ISA is completely seperate from your annual ISA limit of 20k and a completely different issue.

Say for example I had 100K of rio tinto shares in my ISA, I then sell them all.

I then have 100k cash in my shares ISA

I can then bed and ISA 100k worth of any shares into that ISA

The only thing that limits the size of a 'bed and ISA is the size of your ISA pot. and there are some very big ones around !
