Brought up in Raynes Park so know Battersea and Clapham well. I recall my dad talking about the doodle bugs - it was when they stopped buzzing you knew they were about to strike somewhere nearby. Terrifying. Incidentally when that one struck Clapham, my dad was on the Normandy Landings. I'm younger than you but remember shopping with my mum with her ration book in the early 1950s.
