"Signifying the benefits of security
While it is said that fathers often know what’s best for their sons, this isn’t a view to which Gavin Lyons, chief executive of cyber threat security firm Accumuli, would necessarily subscribe. Having been something of a highly promising footballer on the books of both Watford and Wycombe Wanderers, Gavin apparently took his father’s advice to heart, adopting his view that “there is no money” to be had in football and it would be better to get himself “a proper job”.
But, this former Windsor Boys School pupil, it must be said, is doing rather well with his chosen path, particularly in the current role that he took up only in August of last year. Having joined Xerox at a young age, post the football, Gavin has also held positions within The Caudwell Group where, at just 26, he oversaw £100m of revenue and which was followed by a significant position at Compuware. Prior to being head hunted for the CEO position at Accumuli, he was with e-mail encryption business Identum and more recently global tech company SAP. Having cut his teeth in the right places, he is now seemingly fast making his mark at Accumuli, which a few months back acquired Histon-based Signify, which is focused on unique secure authentication systems that do away with the need to conjure up and remember lots of different passwords. Last week I was fortunate enough to pop down the road and meet both Gavin, along with David Abrahams one of the co-founders of Signify, which he formed with the late John Stewart.
Set up with money from family and friends, along with some VC support, Signify, David informed me, had to soldier on through some tough early years. Particularly after the dotcom demise, and being a loss-making company for the first six years, it was near impossible, he explained, to raise further equity funding in order to push the business forward and maximise some real opportunities. Nevertheless, under David’s leadership Signify has gone onto win some significant business, including three of the UK’s top law firms, local authorities building societies and even hedge funds, which are just some of its impressive list of clients. “Our business isn’t sexy and exciting,” David says, but it is unique, secure and reliable, along with being cost-effective and essential.
And it would appear that snapping up Signify is another shrewd move by the buy-and-build group Accumuli, which has now completed four acquisitions in just three years. There are some interesting names within the group, such as Boxing Orange, Tuscany Networks, Fujin Technology and EdgeSeven, which is now joined by Signify.Formerly known as Net Services, which was effectively an AIM-quoted shell, the new entity was born with the focus on becoming
