Feels like we've just seen a bull trap there.

Meta - They have in all but action. If they made a formal offer it would tie them up in all sorts of M&A rules , hence this little silly dance everyone has to do before the formal offer goes in.

DP - That's my thought. He really does want this and has been after it for a while. DEB know this so will reject his first pre-offer and threaten the loan trigger again to up the pace and put the pressure on.

They haven't made an offer but Ashley is being canny, he knows now that DEB have to state if they are willing to entertain an offer or not. If they don't he will up it BUT he'll have to move quickly otherwise they could trigger the bond situation at any point stating they gave Ashley a chance.

I suspect he has a scale of offers on the table and DEB know this and they will 'not entertain or consider bids at that level' . That will send the SP tumbling as folks will be worried that the loan situation could be triggered instantly.

What people are forgetting the DEB CFO seems to be on SPD's side. She will know all of the schulldugery that has gone on. Promised a decent role in Ashley's new Debenhams and she'll sing like a canary should he follow through with his threat to pursue anyone who has engaged in backroom tactics.
