If RBW solved the issue of REE presence in phosphogypsum, namely:

1. REEs mineral inclusions,

2. REEs isomorphous substitution of Ca2+ in gypsum lattice,

3. dispersed soluble REEs salts.

then 1 ton of REE would require 858 kg of sulfuric acid, and REE extraction would be at least 85-90%.

The pilot plant received an investment of over 30mn reais (US$5.3mn) and will process 500t of ionic clays using the patented circular mineral harvesting process. The technology enables the extraction of rare earth concentrate with over 95% purity, using only water and no toxic chemicals.

The plant is expected to process around 200 tons (t) of clays to produce an estimated 150kg of heavy rare earth carbonates including dysprosium and terbium. The pilot plant builds on previous pilot projects and aims to test an optimized closed-loop scheme on a semi-industrial scale.

The plant also aims to produce high-purity heavy rare earth carbonate for future separation plants in the US and to support offtake agreements.

The environmental sustainability of the process design will be demonstrated to stakeholders, with the processed clays being chemically stable for full reforestation.
