A common disadvantage of the ion-exchange chromatography method is its relatively low productivity. In this regard, the ion-exchange method is usually not used to separate the entire sum of REE into individual elements. To separate REE into groups, as well as to obtain individual compounds of light REE, liquid extraction is currently used as a significantly more productive method.
Ion-exchange chromatography (the Spedding method) is used mainly to separate heavy REE, where the use of extraction causes certain difficulties, and to obtain some individual REE of high purity.
