Re: investor day presentation, I was v surprised that no attention was paid to capital return strategy (dividends) + TW tax losses. Am suspicious that they will not be able to maintain the div with > 200m of CapEx.

Alavib - It’s the cash burn that spooked everyone. Went from 270ish net cash to 80ish. Can’t see the dividend being maintained after this operations update which also clearly spelled out > 200m in capex. Numbers don’t square and something has to give. Next leg down occurs after the div cut.

NewKOTB, yes someone has made good money on their SQZ shorts which they put on not too long ago. With AIM stocks information seems to be very leaky so any significant uptick in borrowed stock is something to pay attention to.
Still hold significant position in this one and am kicking myself for not selling more over last few months (I sold about a third). In the battle between great assets and poor management the latter always wins. Need to rerun my model and thesis on this one esp given Labour gov’t

I agree, NKOTB. This is pure speculation on my part and not based on any information other than my reading of the tea leaves, I think MF leaving is the sine qua non for a deal to be done. My reading of the abortive KIST approach was that one big stumbling block was they could not work out who had what roles post-integration and MF was not going let go of the wheel. After the Tailwind deal, M gave him a year and after they took his measure, the axe fell. Will be v interesting the next few days …

The ground should have been better prepared for an announcement like this. Out of the blue is not well received by markets. Was inevitable as others have said.

From 08.01 to 12.01 there has been a jump in SQZ shares that have been borrowed from 735k to 1.2m. Typically this is done to short (however it could also be to facilitate repos however in this situation it’s not likely IMHO) so whoever is selling the stock short at the 210-215 level clearly sees more downside ahead which is surprising given the levels the stock is at now. Just something to keep an eye on. If we get some unexpected good news, this party will likely need to cover thus providing a short term boost to the stock.

Investor PA - you are about to find out that Duster attacks anyone who is not hyper bullish and invested in said object of his hyper bullishness lol. Perhaps with time he’ll learn the value of contrary opinions when backed by fact-based research.

Clearly you have not looked into the details of actually setting up and running an auction. If you take everything that management says at face value then I have shares in the Brooklyn Bridge I’d love to sell you lol
From the work I’ve done it looks like a great asset. I’m less convinced about the management team but it’s very cheap at these levels.

Thanks.
The lack of detail around where they are with the auction process is concerning as setting up a gemstone auction is a hugely complex process - there are AML, tax and other angles to this. I just don’t see them being able to generate liquidity from auctions if they are not very well along in this process.

I was of the impression that chat boards were for the open exchange of ideas (both positive and negative). I did my homework on this name and shared a few of the things I found.
Apologies if I got that wrong and am getting in the way of pumping the stock.

When a great asset (even assuming that it is) meets a bad management team, it’s not the asset that wins.
For your assertions to have even the remotest probability of being true they have to be able to sell the emeralds they pull out of the ground. As far as I’m aware (and I’ve listened to the interviews and read the documents they have produced) they have not publicly stated how they will be selling the emeralds. If they go the Gemfields route of auctions that takes time and there are plenty of complexities involved. Why no information on this critical point at this late juncture?

10m? What are you smoking.
Have you seen the track record of URAH’s clown show of a management team? Even a few cursory internet searches shows an uninterrupted streak of destroying shareholder value over multiple companies. Latest missteps with the capital raise should only underscore this point.

I question how long the investment allowance will last under Labour.

Guidance for 2023 was 40-47K boe p/d in capital markets day presentation in July so it is revised downwards by 2K … no big deal.

Mav,
Buybacks are in Mercuria’s interests as it will increase their holding proportionally as the shares in float will reduce (assuming they are cancelled and not held in treasury) … their stake increases without them having to pay a single penny.

Bingo Norma. Hedging is usually required by lenders for RBL.

There are plenty of single family offices that do their own single line equity research in-house and will look at small/mid-cap opportunities because they have less coverage. To paraphrase Buffett, it’s easier to generate consistently high returns in the small cap space than large caps.

Our own cash yes but we did not have access to it because of management. AA was unlocking a portion of the cash and was eliminating the SQZ management problem
