I totally agree, it can be a lottery. There is a wine puff (sorry buff) at a small regional department store I visit in Yorkshire who is well connected and gets some really decent reds in. I often listen to his recommendations and I'd say he has an 80% hit rate for wines I like.

Actually I love Barolo, I am rarely disappointed by one but Rioja is just slop. it's like blends that have already been blended! A blend of blends and a certain route to an absolutely horrific hangover (for me at least). It's the one red I avoid like the plague, although curiously White Rioja isn't bad.
