As someone who works closely with the farming community I can't say I'm particularly enthused by the clean meat proposition but I believe Matador is right, this industry will take off in the next decade or so as it ticks the animal welfare and low carbon production boxes. It will undoubtably be an inferior product but previous history suggests we will all learn to live with that.
Here is why, OD commented that beef is not as tasty these days as there is less fat. He is right, less fat means less flavour, but the reason for this was the result of necessity. In 1988 the government introduced a whole host of controls to eradicate BSE including the requirement for beef cattle to be slaughtered far younger (under 30 months of age) so they did not have that mature fatty flavour of old.
Did we all stop eating beef since 1988? Of course not, we got used to it being an inferior product than it once was.
Clean meat will see history repeating. The flavour will be not as good as it once was but I will put money on it that we will still eat it.
By the way OD if you want good beef these days you need to buy the stuff that has been hung for 3 or 4 weeks, you won't find it in a supermarket, you will have to go to good butcher.
