I accept that MaT, and I understand the chemistry. What I'm getting at is that I understood that the actual gasification process doesn't produce CO2 because all of the carbon contained in the feedstock would either end up as carbon in the bottom ash, or within the CO and methane in the syngas, but not as CO2.
So the CO2 would only be released at the point that the syngas is burned as fuel for generating electricity. Overall the amount of CO2 produced by the entire process would be much less than incineration, or by steam methane reformation.
As I say, that was my understanding, but I could be wrong. I would be interested to hear from someone who knows the actual circumstances.
