Hi Inner..nothing right or left about freedom of expression or speech, but it has been taken on as a leftist precept to shut down debate, and unfortunately inherited by the younger generation as a “right”
Unfortunately, all western democracies have been based on the freedom to be able to insult or offend...as anything may cause offence to somebody somewhere,
By making ‘being offended’ a right brings into play all sorts of fascistic behaviours..Like the children of Salem who cried “Witch”! And they were believed...or the way the police have been treating all those making allegations as victims as a baseline.
Every day at some point or others, we’re all offended by something or other - something on TV, a remark at work, a look, a way someone dresses - but making it almost criminal is leading to this Snowflake generation way of behaving.
The English language is amazing and includes words like “fool, idiot, untrustworthy, unruly, dirty, horrible,” etc etc etc as just normal words to be used.
Once you start demonising those words, then you lose half of what humans are..
I can foresee a future where there’s lawsuit upon lawsuit for people feeling “offended”. The police are already more than ‘snowed under’ (pardon the pun) with other offences, and now that name-calling is being labelled a “hate crime”...
I think we’re living in dangerous times for free speech.
