The UK govt won't allow Britain to use it's own gas because the only real option is to frack.
They are importing from America and that's fracked.
Figure that one out!
As for hydrogen, the best (most productive & economic) way to produce it is from fracked gas.
But there are alternatives; some of which Igas is involved with or looked into, like anaerobic digestion of food or even sewage waste, which includes the option of direct conversion to hydrogen instead of via methane.
There is also electrolysis, but that has the downside of quickly degrading system components, like electrodes breaking down. This kind of maintenance problem, as far as I see, is the main reason why it's better to extract hydrogen from hydrocarbons or from bioreactors, aside from the increased yield obtained.
