Soft drinks group Britvic has said that the soaring cost of oil-based PET in its bottles, steel ans sugar will hit profits this year. Prices for plastics products are set to continue rising as a result of continued increases in raw materials costs, the British Plastics Federation has warned.
Yesterday’s warning came on the same day that plastics supplier DuPont announced further price rises of as much as €2,000/tonne. * Print Article

Prices for plastics products are set to continue rising as a result of continued increases in raw materials costs, the British Plastics Federation has warned.
Yesterday’s warning came on the same day that plastics supplier DuPont announced further price rises of as much as €2,000/tonne.
BPF director general Peter Davis said: ”All product sectors, be they plastics building products for construction and infrastructure projects, packaging for food distribution or technical components for the automotive and aerospace industries, have been hit and desperately need to pass the increases on to maintain viability’.’
”Some grades of Polyethylene and Polypropylene have increased by 70% and 80% respectively since January 2009.
2011 will bring little let-up in input costs for the plastic packaging industry, the head of the British Plastics Federation has predicted.
In comments to Packaging News on the BPF’s outlook for 2011, director general Peter Davis said that the high raw materials prices and problems of availability would be an “ongoing concern” in the year to come, while energy prices would continue their upward trend.
BASF said demand for bio-based and biodegradable polymers was improving and the market was growing at a rate of more than 20% a year.
