"Industrial property group Brixton surged after the property group reassured the market it was compliant with its banking covenants at the end of 2008, despite a sharp deterioration in its financial position. The firm reported a pre-tax loss of £768.8m for the year, compared with a profit of £58.2m the previous year. Net asset value per share fell 47% to 290p. Many market observers were expecting Brixton to accompany its results with a rights issue or some other form of fund raising but the company said it was still considering a wide variety of options aimed at strengthening its balance sheet."

Got your note on AV. I’m steering clear of anything long in the financial sector, generally. Now, of course, I’ve been in AV. [long] - twice. That is because I believed that the drop was too steep, as it was. I guess, in these times, one has to assess, very carefully, each position on their own merits. However, on the whole, I, personally would need very special reasons to have much exposure in this sector, right now .ATB

Whilst Argos had a better than expected sales performance in the latest period, the environment for the new financial year will be extremely challenging. We are responding with the necessary trading and cost actions, and believe the Group will maintain its strong relative position and competitive advantage." The company states that like-for-like sales fell 1.6% in the eight weeks, but this was a marked improvement in the underlying trend, in the 18 weeks to January like-for-like sales were down 7.5%. Sales for Argos were 575 million pounds with gross margin movement down 125 bps. There was strong progress in consumer electronics driven by TVs, video gaming and the new PC ranges. The weakest performers wee furniture and homewares reflecting the challenging market conditions. For Homebase figures were slightly worse with sales of 205 million down 10.2% on like-for-like sales and gross margin movement down 175 bps. For myself, the SP has dropped so much that I would rather, just leave it, and suffer a total loss, if it goes that way, or if it goes the other, then at least, I’m still in to take advantage. However, for now, I won’t be investing any more. ATB
