Bangladesh politics bear little resemblance to Western ones, it's like going back to the Middle Ages, Hassina and Zia loathe each other and their supporters feel the same way about their respective parties, It's interesting to look at some of the history as they are both alleged to be equally corrupt. Wikipedia has lots of interesting info around this, prior to the 2009 Hassina victory the then BNP ruling party were ousted in 2007 in favour of a caretaker government supported by the military "In 2007, the caretaker government pursued graft and corruption charges against both major party leaders and some of their senior staff, trying to clean up the country, which was notorious for corruption. It filed charges against 160 politicians, civil servants, and businessmen, including Tareque and Arafat Rahman, two sons of the former prime minister, Khaleda Zia, who were both active in the BNP.[19] Later in the year, the government filed charges of corruption against both her and Sheikh Hasina, leader of the Awami League. This anti-corruption effort was greeted with approval by the people, who were tired of government officials "siphoning off the country's wealth." on top of that both Zia and Hasina were accused of murder.....
