Nice article digit, more than 2/3rds of their natural resources is coal and at least 572 million tonnes of that is easily accessible in the Phulbari licence area ...and they are very aware of it and that the real reason it hasn't been mined before now was vested corrupt politicians and their cronies

And it now turns out that what was 5tcf a few days ago is actually 2tcf no surprise it was just speculation and needs drilling to prove up, 5-7 years... everything is a pipe dream in the near term except Phulbari

Energy Adviser to the interim government, Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, announced the findings following a review meeting on the Bhola gas field’s reserve. The earlier report of a 5 TCF reserve is incorrect. Based on accurate assessments, Bhola’s proven gas reserve stands at 2 TCF, the adviser clarified during a press conference at the Ministry on Thursday.

This announcement comes after several media outlets, citing a joint report by the Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (Bapex) and Russian energy giant Gazprom, claimed Bhola had a recoverable gas reserve of over 5 TCF. Petrobangla, the state-owned oil and gas corporation, had also supported this report.

Decision on Coal Mining

Whether a few like it or not, the interim government should make a firm decision on mining coal. Such a precious natural resource must not remain buried underground forever. Bangladesh has no obligation to limit emissions. There are state-of-the-art modern mining technologies for addressing concerns that theoreticians argue against mining coal. Not mining local coal is one of the main reasons for landing into the present chronic fuel supply crisis. The interim government should sincerely examine all the pros and cons of mining coal.

Why would it not, the conclusion of any presentation would be for our request that they make the bureaucracy work to process according to the Mining Rules and the existing contract. We would not be asking for political interference in any way other than them to tell the bureaucrats to fulfil their jobs within the rules

In the 'new' Bangladesh where the focus has been on moving away from Political Interference in Energy & Power and other matters, considering the licence was awarded years ago to develop the mine and all requested surveys and impact assessments have been done to the highest international standards, and it’s only the Scheme of Development, a technical and bureaucratic matter that needs the nod, for politicians to then get involved other than to say just do your job, will be ironic and pretty hypocritical in the current climate

Been thinking about the perceptions of whether the Interim Government has the authority to approve the Scheme of Development or there has to be a wait till elections have happened.

I was reading back through some communication I had and the fact is there is already a contract in place for Asia Energy to develop the mine, all that is required is the approval of the Scheme of Development, although it was illegally suppressed under the previous government it is not a political decision, it’s a bureaucratic one. They just need to make the bureaucracy work to process according to the Miniing Rules and the existing contract. Since it was hidden by the energy cartel it’s pretty obvious it wasn’t a part of some corruption scheme that we were a party to

Phulbari can be producing coal before they get any gas from the existing finds mentioned, no pipelines/transmission in place to transport to Dhaka, be at least 2 years to implement that if they got on it now. Pretty sure this was reported before and just being regurgitated, The rest of the finds are mainly speculation with between 10-50% chance of success, plus requires 49 new wells etc etc. Wish them well but proving up and getting to market if they all did come off would probably take 5-7 years and involve a lot of ducks lining up.
