Plans submitted for innovative accommodation solution for trainees
16.10.2014
Bilfinger Salamis UK has submitted a planning application for modular accommodation in support of its Skills Centre and safety training, in response to increased demand for its practical courses.
The Bridge of Don-based company initially opened its Skills Centre in 2007 as a staff-only facility to ensure all Bilfinger Salamis UK staff had up-to-date training, and could have their competency verified. Over 70% of the Centre’s business now comes from external clients from across the UK, as the energy industry addresses skill shortages, and focuses on having a fully trained and competent workforce.
The centre is now the only site in Aberdeen to offer OPITO-approved painting and blasting courses, and also offers a range of working at height courses, confined space training, and offshore “S-Cape” systems training, amongst others.
Bilfinger Salamis UK, which provides integrated, multi-disciplined support services and maintenance solutions to a range of clients, principally in the energy industry, trains over 8,500 delegates a year at the Skills Centre, and plans to expand its current training catalogue to include further industry-specific trades training in 2015.
However, a shortage of accommodation in Aberdeen, which will be exacerbated with the start of work on the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route in 2015, means the company is looking at alternative options for those undergoing training.
“WITH PLANS TO WIDEN TO SCOPE OF OUR TRAINING WITH ADDITIONAL COURSES, WE ARE FACING A REAL PROBLEM WHEN IT COMES TO FINDING ACCOMMODATION FOR THESE VISITORS, SO WE ARE LOOKING AT ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS.”
Bilfinger Salamis Skills Centre manager Wendy Stephan said: “We have a large number of delegates travelling from outside Aberdeen to attend courses at the Skills Centre, with many coming from the central belt, or the north of England.
“With plans to widen to scope of our training with additional courses, we are facing a real problem when it comes to finding accommodation for these visitors, so we are looking at alternative options.”
Bilfinger Salamis UK has worked with portable accommodation providers Snoozebox on a possible solution for those receiving training.
Plans have been submitted to Aberdeen City Council for a modular, system-built facility using 45ft ISO shipping containers which are converted to provide ensuite bedrooms. The proposed facility would initially be open for five years.
The accommodation would be based at Bilfinger Salamis UK’s existing site at Greenhole Place, Bridge of Don, and would offer 80 beds for delegates undergoing training at the firm’s Skills Centre, which is located within 10 minutes walking distance.
The compact and cleverly designed rooms feature a full-size double bed and a bunk. The rooms are equipped with an ensuite bathroom (shower, toilet and sink). Each
