IBM were once asked how many computers are needed world wide, after much consideration they said five. In fairness the computers were room sized, gruesomely expensive and did very little (in comparison with today’s offerings.)
The shareholders were (probably) quite correctly saying “but we’ve only sold two, so when will this f###er take off...oh and by the way, the chief executive is clearly responsible for the situation...” Not unlike some are saying today.
If somebody (let’s call him IBM1970) had said then, that soon everybody would have a hand held mobile device and most households would have computers, leading to profits being measured in the billions of dollars per week, no-one would Understandably believe them.
The thing is both statements were correct, it’s just that the timescale was different. Apple, Microsoft, Amazon and many others have exceeded the expectations of even the most hopeful of investors, but not overnight, and not without a few false dawns. We may not be in the same league, but I do firmly believe in our future... starting tomorrow at 7am will be absolutely fine with me.
