Me thinks the ministers are still wrangling over this - the President was clear “ Mr. Speaker, the effect of the reduction in the benchmark import values, which became effective from April 2019, will be mitigated by enhanced trade tax compliance following the introduction of additional efficiency measures at the ports, including operations by Meridian Port Services Ltd“ (Page 27) https://www.mofep.gov.gh/sites/default/files/budget-statements/2019-Mid-Year-Budget-Statement.pdf
Therefore revenue and tax collection is key and that is what MPS and WSG are supporting - of course the minister for transport and his cronies will want lower tariffs https://mobile.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/NewsArchive/Transport-Minister-directs-GPHA-to-reduce-container-charges-806614 but that may not be in the government’s interests either as efficiency will be impacted having a negative effect on overall governmental revenues? In the interim we continue to be paid :-)
The new Terminal 3 is getting busy - bonus I guess completed 7 months early adding to our revenue http://mps-gh.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/T3-BERTHING-SCHEDULE-23122019-R.pdf
Massive vessel on route to Tema https://youtu.be/wdqXmpRBlkc
GAA training Flynas pilots https://twitter.com/GAA_bh/status/1193886303357743104 and Bin Hethlain has an interest in Flynas https://m.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=431686250214220&id=431668910215954 can only mean we are in the right network to build relationships and win contracts
Being reported widely as having being agreed https://www.worldcargonews.com/news/tariff-increase-for-tema-63345 so can’t be too far off now
Looks like the Togolese are in town having a look at Tema operations https://twitter.com/TogoVeille/status/1198132613405446145 whose expansion was supported by Bollore https://www.reuters.com/article/bollore-togo-idUKLDE7261CI20110307 going in to become the largest port in West Africa http://www.west-africa-brief.org/content/en/togo’s-port-lomé-becomes-regional-transit-hub Either they are sampling the competition the face from Tema or running a similar model which means WSG could be in business???
https://twitter.com/novice14_uk/status/1198203611584647168 back out of administration hopefully we get a few switches to Tallymoney
Tanzanian subsidiary under liquidation https://twitter.com/novice14_uk/status/1198146631570468864
https://www.nsemwoha.com/bridgetown-and-tema-sign-agreement-establishing-sister-port-relationship/ both with lofty ambitions and politicians keeping voters happy.
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-cameroon-port-idUSKBN1X329O Wonder if WSG was part of the Bolloré consortium??
https://www.globaltenders.com/tenders-saudi-arabia/saudi-arabia-security-services-tenders.php Lots of security tenders going hopefully WSG are on the case and high time that PF updates the market on what’s going on!!!!
http://www.myjoyonline.com/news/2019/november-4th/tema-and-takoradi-ports-lose-over-100m-in-import-duties.php Just asserts why MPS and WSG are needed - GPHA have been loosing money and tax income and need to be replaced!
Looks like the revenue chaps are stamping their authority and running the show “The Board Chairman of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Prof. Stephen Adei has instructed Customs Officers at the Port of Tema not to take instructions from senior officers of other state agencies also operating in the port“ http://radiotamale.com/2019/11/01/dont-take-instructions-from-any-superior-officer-prof-adei-to-customs-officers-at-tema-port/ hence the GPHA has no say over revenue collection - this means every container needs to be scanned and items accounted for to ensure import tariffs are paid - no more brown envelopes and under the table payments - the revenue chaps are serious that means we are needed!!!
DIT led Iran retail show for U.K. businesses https://twitter.com/tradegovukMENA/status/1189922688606887938 what’s the point of having these if at the end we cannot trade and get our contracts up and running??!!
Thanks Foxhill - the push is for “concessions” as everyone wants a bit of the pie - the reality is no one is going to build them a port for free!!
The reality is the Sri Lankan’s lost ‘ownership’ of their port in Colombo to the Chinese https://colombogazette.com/2019/10/29/revised-land-deed-for-colombo-port-city-handed-over-to-china/
Ghana likewise cannot expect foreign investment and claim it to be its own or via taxpayers when there hasn’t been any!!
This is a business not a charity - the ‘concessions’ they are pushing for may or May not be agreed and could be minor to keep some politicians happy in the interim and win them votes to keep them in power. Some other ‘corrupt’ project will come along and all will be forgotten on Tema (and the expansion and not forgetting Takoradi that has already been given the go ahead - surely there would have been a halt if the project was under threat? There hasn’t! For the very reason it benefits their economy but the wish to focus on short term gain which has no impact on what is being delivered long term!).
“ Government in 2015 negotiated the 35 years contract with the MPS for the development and operationalisation of a multipurpose container terminal at the Tema Port to create a deeper vessel capacity with an accompanying container storage facility as parts of efforts to position Ghana's ports as a hub within the West African sub-region. ” https://mobile.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/NewsArchive/Tema-Port-MPS-deal-to-be-renegotiated-746110
It’s a done deal and that is a reality!!! They cannot terminate as that will be a serious breach and detrimental to Ghana’s standing as a place for fair business (not forgetting the billions poured in for this project through the IMF and EU who will place Ghana under severe financial penalties) - the only thing that will matter to us is how much we get which in the grand scheme of things may not matter too much as it is an income generating contract!!!
Has a strong coal background https://www.businessnews.com.au/Person/Alistair-Muir -let’s hope he can deliver!!!
