Seems to be a lot of "what aboutism" going on. What about so many strikes, the crumbling NHS, bungled HS2, Covid contracts for cronies, unsustainable GOV borrowing, low taxes for the richest, non-dom Russian donors, bullying and partying at the top of GOV, Doris knighting his wife-assaulting Dad etc.

There are plenty of actual problems that the CONs are smoke screening with the culture wars against the BBC, lefty lawyers, trans/sex education in school [going to be ramped up big time for the next election] etc. Don't let them distract you and redirect your anger away from the people who have been governing for the last 12 years.

Remember that if they wanted to have solved the migrant problem they would have taken better steps, resourcing the system better and having better relationships with France / the EU. Instead, they prefer to have the problem fester, so they can use it as a wedge issue to fight an election on [which is clearly a better tactic than fighting an election on their successes in GOV over the last decade]

My memory says that the BoE has been reluctant to force banks to account for 'mark to market' losses on Gilt. But our banks are sitting on Gilt losses as well as losses on commercial property and their share prices have factored in higher interest rate margins but seem to be ignoring these losses as well as other bad debts that will slowly be rising as inflation whacks the man in the street.

Maybe no commentators, according to the Times.

Unfortunately for SVB, its fire sale came at a time when soaring Federal Reserve interest rates pushed the price of bonds significantly lower, causing realised losses on its investment portfolio.'

So they lost 9% cashing out the safe US Treasuries; if any UK banks are sitting on losses that big on UK Gilt... they could be guilty of bringing down the banking sector yet again. Expect the BOE to make them start accounting for these losses very soon as there is only so much money around to repair bank balance sheets and if ours need a bit of refinancing better get in before the Italian, Irish, French, German etc.

Yup - SVB was holding bonds that they bought in a very low interest environment; when rates went up the value of the bonds went down and they were in deep trouble when the Silicone Valley startups who banked with them needed cash and a run started on the bank.

AND - our own bans are sitting on unrealised losses on bonds that are worth significantly less than they paid for them. They need to keep as much cash on hand as possible so they will have to start increasing what they offer depositors and the lovely margins that they have been repriced on will go up in smoke. Bank shares may go be going back where they came from...

That is the sole reason they do not want to solve the problem... if there was not a 'boat people' problem, who would they have to demonise other than non-christians, lbgtq, non-whites, scots, the welsh, left lawyers, civil servants, the eu, the french, people who do not speak english, russians, chinese etc
