The lab-based tests are not the same as the finger-prick self-testing kits that the government said in March could soon be ready for sale to the general public — a claim that ministers have since rowed back on.
The government has asked a group of companies to develop a finger-prick antibody test that could be used at home. One of them, Omega Diagnostics, said on Thursday that progress was continuing but it did not give any guidance on when the test might be ready or when large-scale manufacturing might begin.
