The reason for the rise finally....****However, economists predicted that an easing of coronavirus restrictions in many US states could mean the unemployment rate could be levelling off.
Initial jobless claims fell to just below three million in the week ending May 9, down slightly from 3.2 million. While it was the smallest weekly increase since mid-March, it is still several times larger than normal levels.
Paul Ashworth, economist at Capital Economics, said a small increase in the continuing claims data suggested the number of workers returning to work “was nearly as high as the number of people losing a job”. Continuing claims edged up to 22.8 million in the week ending May 2, a rise from 22.4 million, the latest data showed.
He predicted the unemployment rate will start to drop back as states reopening causes a “much bigger swing in hiring versus firing over the next couple of weeks”.
It will definitely be upwards from here...
