The paradox with the miners union was that they always said the following.

We should have always kept our military at the right level.

America wanted to be our guardian angel as it gave them leverage over us, and our politicians fell for it, France for their own reasons chose not too, correctly as it turns out. Every time America wanted a little war we and others tagged along !
