The oncology-focused biologics market is actually now larger than the oncology-focused small molecules market (currently $110 billion versus $80 billion per annum, worldwide).
This has occurred not because biologics boast superior efficacy to small molecules, but because they are safer. The latter are more powerful (literally, synthetic toxins invented to decimate cancer cells) and much faster acting.
But of course, the key issue with treating cancer with small molecules is that they tend to decimate all cells.
Hence the explosion in the growth of oncology-focused biologics over the past two decades - as they are generally more targeted.
Remove that key issue of off-target cell destruction that is holding small molecules back, and the entire oncology industry will experience a tectonic shift.
That is why there has been so much cash poured by Big Pharma into developing the relatively new class of antibody-drug conjugates.
Yet ADCs still endure issue with off-target toxicity.
