The 'Europa Metals Iberia' deposit in El Bierzo will create 250 direct jobs to exploit 7 million tons
To date, almost five million euros have been invested since 2006, of which one and a half have been made in the last 2 years
The company Europa Metals Iberia has presented this Friday the "Toral Project ", a bet in El Bierzo to extract in the Region Zinc (Zn), Lead (Pb) and Silver (Ag), as detailed by the company . The current research permit in which the project is framed runs until 2023.
This project will create between 200 and 250 direct jobs, as confirmed by the company, although they advance that "in mining for each direct job, 3 to 5 indirect jobs are created". "Local employability is very important due to the region's mining past. Mining is in the Bierzo's DNA, and this is a competitive advantage, both for knowledge and experience and for respect for the profession. What we would like is to adapt this to the mining of the 21st century: destigmatize the recent past ”. In addition, they have emphasized the importance of the qualification of workers who come from mining, for which they are already considering training programs,
The production level is 17 million tons of which seven would be exploited. This amount of metals is guaranteed by the quality of the mineral that has been found in the area and by the mining method that is being used, underground mining. In addition, the company has confirmed that the " enormous possibilities of the project ensure" the 10 years of production in which it is expected to extract 700 thousand tons per year. However, they affirm that, "the mining processes are slow and expensive," explained those responsible, "so it will take between 2 and 3 years for their construction."
To date , almost five million euros have been invested since 2006, of which one and a half have been made in the last 2 years," they say from the company.
Europa Metals Iberia is working to evaluate the technical-economic, social and environmental viability of the future mining operation . Since 2007, various research campaigns have been developed in the Toral project, taking as a starting point the previous works developed in the 80s of the last century. The first works have focused on surface cartography, followed by geochemistry of soils and rocks and geophysical campaigns. These studies have revealed anomalies in Zn, Pb and Ag whose extension has been verified with surveys. In total, more than 100 mining research wells have been carried out, with depths of up to 1,285 m.
The interpretation of the results of the campaigns has made it possible to define a mineral deposit of about 3 km in length and variable thickness around 3 m. The recognized depth is about 900 m although the deposit is open at depth. The research work has not finished and will focus on the more detailed cubing of the most interesting areas from the mining point of view, as well as on hydrogeological, geotechnical and environmental research.
