I visited the Fujitsu stand at DSEI yesterday (impressive stand) and it was brilliant to see our institutional knowledge management AI tool for Defence (Saga) being demo'd by the Fujitsu team. This is not only an example of GenAI, and AI workflows, deployed against an MoD wide capability but also how a Sovereign UK SME (HQ'd in Belfast) is collaborating with a Global SI prime with their scale and expertise. Very relevant with the publication this week of the Defence Industrial Strategy and it's focus in underpinning the UK SME industrial base.

Thanks to Andy Laidler, James Belam and Steve Campion for the collaboration and we look forward to our collaboration with Alexandra Bailey team growing over the course of this year and next.

Companies are desperate for this stuff more than ever

Land Rover extends shutdown after cyber attack

Jaguar Land Rover's (JLR) UK factories are now expected to remain closed until at least Wednesday after work was disrupted by a cyber attack just over a week ago.

The car plants at Halewood and Solihull and its Wolverhampton engine facility, along with production facilities in Slovakia, China and India, have been unable to operate since the company fell victim to the cyber attack.

Staff who work on the production lines have been told to remain at home.

JLR shut down its IT systems in response to the attack on 31 August, in order to protect them from damage. However, this caused major disruption.

JLR says it is working around the clock to restart its networks in a controlled and safe manner, and is liaising with third party cyber security specialists and law enforcement.

Last Thursday, JLR instructed staff to stay at home until at least Tuesday as it continued to grapple with the fallout from the cyber attack.

The carmaker, which is owned by India's Tata Motors, has not commented on reports that disruption could continue for several weeks.

Under normal circumstances, the company builds about 1,000 cars a day. The production stoppage has had a significant impact on the company's suppliers, with some understood to have told their own staff not to come into work.

As well as forcing the factories to stop building cars, it also left dealerships unable to register new cars and garages that maintain JLR vehicles unable to order the parts they needed – although it is understood workarounds have since been put in place.

The attack began at what is traditionally a popular time for consumers to take delivery of new vehicles. The latest batch of new registration plates became available on Monday, 1 September.

Last week, Shaun Adams, who manages car parts supplier Qualplast, told the BBC that a lengthy shutdown would be "concerning" for the business.

"If this starts progressing over weeks, then we would have to seriously look at what we need to future-proof."

Not just MOD

Couple of points that stand out:

• Commercial rollout starts in December this isn’t years away, revenue opportunity opens this year.

• Built with one of the Magnificent 7 tech giants hyperscale infrastructure + credibility from day one.

• Shaped with UK military end-users so it’s not blue-sky R&D, it’s a tool built to solve live operational problems.

• Aligned with UK gov priority spend – National Security Act, Cyber Resilience Bill, new Cyber & Electromagnetic Command. Clear policy tailwinds here.

• They’re pitching themselves as the UK’s first software-led defence company moving fast where the big primes are slower.

The takeaway is that ALRT has gone from “strategy talk” to live product delivery. Defence is a massive market, and sovereign digital resilience is only getting more urgent (Russia/Telegram ops already destabilising EU/UK). If they execute, this could be the first of a whole suite of products.

Feels like a line-in-the-sand RNS, first product, first deployment, first real chance to monetise. Market probably hasn’t priced in how significant this pivot from strategy, product is.

DYOR, but this looks like a milestone moment for ALRT.

In Dune, the Ixians are a society known for building highly advanced machines and forbidden technologies, often pushing the boundaries of what’s allowed.

They’re associated with innovation, secrecy, and disruptive tech exactly the kind of connotation a defence AI project would want.

Ixian is a reference to cutting-edge, almost sci-fi-level technology from Dune.

Development of the product has been carried out in collaboration with one of the world's Magnificent 7 technology leaders. Whitespace engineers have worked directly with the partner's engineering team to integrate AI-native cloud infrastructure into Project Ixian, embedding hyperscale capability from inception.

This collaboration gives Project Ixian sovereign-grade resilience and scalability from day one, positioning Defence Technologies as one of the very few emerging defence companies able to operate at the scale of the primes. By building on infrastructure already relied upon by governments, telecoms, and critical industries worldwide, the product is proven to perform at allied scale.

Importantly, the product has not been developed in isolation. The build has been shaped through workshops with frontline end-users in the UK military, ensuring that its design directly reflects operational requirements. This approach ensures true product-market fit, with capabilities aligned to the challenges that matter most to those on the ground, not just those in planning rooms.

Poland shoots down Russian drones after 'unprecedented airspace violation'

Poland's fellow Nato members have issued statements expressing solidarity and concerns.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said Russia's violations of Polish airspace was "unacceptable".

"The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine poses a threat to the security of all of Europe.

"Poland has every right to defend its airspace. We give our full support to Poland, as a NATO ally and EU member. Sweden and Poland stand united in our support for Ukraine," he said.

Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs posted on X to express his "full support and solidarity" with Poland and its allies.

He said "Russian aggression in Ukraine affects us directly and appropriate measures must be taken".

Norway's Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide also called Russia's move "deeply concerning and entirely unacceptable", reaffirming Norway's "steadfast support for our ally Poland and our shared commitment to European security".
