Creative value initiatives don't arrive in a steady stream. In a dearth, & when cash-heavy, divi and buy backs offer another option. The latter can always be reversed by placing; divi has gone for good. Still, better to pass the cash than waste it on sub-optimal initiatives! All imo.

The thread on which you last posted appears deleted. I have no idea why, it seemed fairly innocuous compared to some dross on here.

You described share deletion as burning paid-for assets. Nothing could be further from the truth. When the company owns a share in the company, it is just that, a share in the company. If you delete it, every other share (including those in treasury) becomes a proportionally larger share of the company. One must remember, the sp is just what someone is prepared to buy or sell it for at this moment. Whatever the company is worth, assets and value creation, each share is a tiny fraction thereof.

Persi that's a fair point of view not identical to my own. Don't think it is a débâcle, not yet anyway; remember all petroleum exploration has potential risk and reward. Imo our 16% is just right to make a bit if it goes right, & to limit loss if not. EVs might reduce liquid demand, but we'll need gas for a while yet; currently it gets liquefied and shipped thousands of miles, at some cost. Also stuff the evil gasmonger Putin.
