Odins, we hadn't really thought N coast, we will be there Winter. P d Pargo is quite fresh for altitude, agreed. Guess N has sunny yet sheltered areas if you look around. While we love an (reasonable) hotel in Ponta do Sol, I would always advise new visitors to stay W of Funchal centre, but not Lido. That way you have bus routes all over the island: do you go on holiday to drive? Mind, taxis aren't dear.

Shed, no sorry, the quote was provided by Bricks. Bricks, the infill theory would certainly make sense, as if the voids are filled with waste, no-one can easily return for marginal reserves in future when prices rise.

I can see this is a big issue. No-one likes a landscapes scarred with waste tips. Shipping waste away as aggregate needs infrastructure, is unpopular with existing aggregate suppliers and is not always the best material. And now, people seem to have issues with back-fill. Eeh, who'd be a miner? (ans - anyone with a resource like this!)

Bricks, could indoor mining be a euphemism or poor translation for underground mining, versus open-pit, opencast? I guess with open-pit, although you have to remove a lot more overburden waste, it does allow extraction of all the ore. From a total mining layman.
