I believe job losses at RM through 'natural wastage' already run at around 8-10,000 per year, so 20,000 job losses is hardly a disastrous figure and if RM are patient they could achieve that level of staff reduction in little more than 2 years with little or no need for VR to be offered.

I'd say letters are now back up to 'normal' Summer levels, in fact probably slightly higher thanks to the sales and promotions that various firms are having.

The crazy thing is that a part timer who has been working over their contracted hours throughout this period will get a smaller bonus than a full timer who hasn't been willing to work over their contracted hours.

Mad - As you say it depends on the population density of the area but in an urban/suburban area it would take considerably less than 2 hours to deliver 60 parcels.

Don't believe the hype 200iq... yes the current non-fully automated system of processing parcels isn't the most cost efficient method of doing it but we certainly aren't losing money on parcels.

NHS workers have had below average infection rates throughout this pandemic, there's not even much point in them pulling sickies at the moment given that most NHS workers outside of covid wards have had little to no work to do anyway.

Of course there are some **** takers in the job and yes it is usually the most senior ones, but to compare them to the likes of the dockers or BL workers in the 70's is ludicrous . The current RM malingerers are rank amateurs at malingering compared to them.
In the 70's it was entire workforces that were taking the ****, at RM now we're talking maybe 2-3 % of the workforce.

200iq - I've said before, I'm pretty certain the current SP doesn't even reflect the total value of freehold land and property that RM currently own, I'm surprised a property developer doesn't buy us out just to get their hands on the property assets and liquidate the rest of the business!

200iq - The trouble is RM have already got rid of many of their letter sequencing machines due to the huge drop in letters being processed because of DSA.

No he wouldn't!!
This huge increase in pkt volumes and the increased revenue/profit generated as a result of them has been an absolute disaster for Rico's strategy of driving down the SP and talking down the prospects of RM in order to push through the business transformation changes he wants to make.

I imagine the delay in releasing the full year report is because they're busy trying to manipulate the figures to make income and profit look as poor as possible!

How shameless and embarrassing is that... I'm pretty sure HRH's letter wasn't aimed at that prick Gold stood holding it up by the RM van, probably the first time he's ventured out from his home office in the last 5 weeks.

Derek R - Don't forget virtually all these people needing repatriating will have actually already paid for a flight home... the £75m is what the airlines supposedly need for the additional cost of getting them back.

I see Billionaire Branson and the other airlines have been given what appears to be a very generous £75m to ''help'' with the cost of repatriating Brits abroad as they ''can't be expected to bear the brunt of the cost''

So I ask again, how come RM are having to incur huge additional expenditure by carrying on operating due to being classed as a ''key industry'' and yet apparently aren't entitled to any govt. financial help at all?

In light of the latest developments I thought I'd bump my own previously ignored thread... if the govt is willing to do whatever it takes to protect the nations cupcake makers, dog groomers, nail technicians and pretty much all other non-essential businesses both large and small, how come RM isn't entitled to some form of govt. help with the additional cost of having to remain operating due being classified as a ''key industry''?

Given that the government is helping just about everyone else then surely if RM is classed as a key industry that needs to continue operating then RM should also get some govt help with the additional cost burden it's currently facing... increased sick pay, increased overtime pay, increased cleaning, van hire etc?

Also given the govt help that everyone else is getting shouldn't ALL key workers get some form of govt recognition/reward for continuing to work throughout this crisis?

Other people are now sat at home enjoying a nice bit of gardening leave and picking up up to £2,500 a month for it, whilst key workers (most of whom earn far less than that) are still expected to be working with all the additional costs that it brings and putting themselves at increased risk of catching the virus.
