Greece’s enfant terrible of politics not impressed by British negotiating tactics
“When the inevitable is portrayed as a breakthrough, you know there is a problem,” former Greece Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis told Bloomberg TV, commenting on the UK’s apparent willingness to now pay the EU £50 billion (€56.65 billion, approx) as part of a ‘Brexit bill’.
“Britain was always going to honour its commitments with the EU if it wants a free trade agreement which makes sense and is mutually advantageous,” added Varoufakis.
But he also argued that the UK had shot itself in the foot, because “London has accepted an architecture of negotiations which was designed to lead to a disadvantageous outcome for Britain.”
The author of Adults in the Room: My Battle with Europe’s Deep Establishment said that by allowing the EU to set the terms in Round 1 of the negotiations, Britain had already lost.
Varoufakis added that there was no proof that Britain would get what it wants from offering more money as a divorce settlement.
He argued that what Britain primarily wants out of the Brexit negotiations is “a deal on services, because that is what really matters for this country.”
