David Davis strategy for negotiating Brexit with Czechoslovakia causes laughter in Czech Republic
David Davis caused something of a media storm in the Czech Republic when in October he referred to Czechoslovakia not having a government shortly after the October 2017 elections in the Eastern European EU member state.
British Minister for Brexit David Davis suffered a major embarrassment when he claimed at a UK parliamentary meeting that Czechoslovakia does not have a government. Hes right. Czechoslovakia has not had a government since January 1st, 1993, commented Foreign 24, a Czech online news portal.
Czechoslovakia was dissolved and divided into two sovereign states after the fall of the Iron Curtain: Czech Republic and Slovakia. Davis was referring to the fact that Czech parties were still in coalition talks after the October 2017 general elections.
Slovakian daily HN Online noted that Davis slip of the tongue is not the first. In 2013, American Twitter users regularly confused Chechnya with Czech Republic in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing.
This is also not the first time Davis has perplexed people with an apparent lack of geopolitical awareness. During the Brexit campaign he spoke of a post-Brexit UK-German trade deal giving free access for their cars and industrial goods this despite the fact that as a member of the EU, Germany cant sign separate trade deals. He was also criticised for calling the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic an internal border, making it sound to some ears like he thought Ireland was part of the UK.
