4 LAB MPs saved PM- leadership vote18 Jul 2018 14:59
These four Labour MPs voted against a customs union and saved Theresa May from a leadership vote
Pro-EU MPs lost a bid to make the UK change its Brexit strategy in favour of joining a customs union, if it does not agree a free-trade deal with the EU.
The Government won the vote by 307-301, meaning that if the Labour rebels had voted with their party whip the motion would have succeeded. 12 Conservatives broke ranks to back the customs union measure, even though Tory whips told would-be rebels that there would be a confidence vote that evening if it passed.
Labour MPs who voted against: Frank Field (Birkenhead) Kate Hoey (Vauxhall) John Mann (Bassetlaw) Graham Stringer (Blackley and Broughton) Kelvin Hopkins* (Luton North)
Conservative MPs who voted for: Heidi Allen (South Cambridgeshire) Guto Bebb (Aberconwy) Ken Clarke (Rushcliffe) Jonathan Djanogly (Huntingdon) Dominic Grieve (Beaconsfield) Stephen Hammond (Wimbledon) Dr Phillip Lee (Bracknell) Nicky Morgan (Loughborough) Robert Neil (Bromley and Chiselhurst) Antoinette Sandbach (Eddisbury) Anna Soubry (Broxtowe) Dr Sarah Wollaston (Totnes)
Mrs May was defeated 305-301 on a separate amendment to her flagship Trade Bill, which will require her to seek continued UK participation in the EU’s system for regulation of medicines after Brexit.
