Some senior Downing Street figures would like to introduce UK-only passport queues, an idea that has been kicked around Whitehall for more than a year. It is attractive to some in No 10 because it is simple and easy to explain to the public.
It is likely to be hugely complicated, though, and potentially self-defeating. About two thirds of passengers on incoming flights are British and there is little capacity in airport arrival zones or sufficient staffing to implement the idea.

There is still one big, central problem and that is customs. Mrs May's proposal for a facilitated customs arrangement with the EU is not even really negotiable, as the EU has made very clear.

The reason is not one of ideological dogma, like some of Brussels' objections to UK proposals. Instead it is rather practical. Under the plan, Britain would collect EU tariffs for goods passing through the country on the way to the Continent while being free to charge lower tariffs on goods destined for the UK market.

But the EU fears such a system would lead to a smugglers' paradise where importers declared goods for the UK market to pay the lower tariffs, then re-exported them to the EU without checks.

Brussels already has concerns about the way HMRC applies Europe's customs code as it is and is unlikely to trust it more after Brexit. In short the facilitated arrangement is unacceptable. That could push Mrs May back to the binary choice she has tried to hard to avoid: stay in a customs union with the EU and lose the ability to do free trade deals or exit and face the prospect of businesses relocating their operations to the Continent.

Blue passports are so last season – the latest Brexit accessory, as put forward by No 10, is Brits-only queues at the airports.

Queueing is, after all, quintessentially British and after we leave the EU we will regain the right to stand around waiting for things for as long as we want.

Sajid Javid, the home secretary, is thought to be resisting Mrs May's plans to create such lanes after Brexit.

No 10 is searching for eye-catching ways to make Britain look different after Brexit next March when the "standstill" transition is due to be in place. Theresa May has stated repeatedly that Britain will always honour all it's EU commitments REGARDLESS.
To suggest otherwise is foolhardy as no PM would ever do a Russia and default on it's debt and spoil our chances as a worldwide reliable partner to trade with.
