French President Emmanuel Macron insisted on Monday that the arrest of Telegram Messenger Inc. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Pavel Durov was not a political decision linked to the latter being Russian but a "part of an ongoing judicial investigation."
"In a state governed by the rule of law, on social networks as in real life, freedoms are exercised within a framework established by law to protect citizens and respect their fundamental rights. It is up to the justice system, in complete independence, to ensure that the law is respected," Macron tweeted. Meanwhile, the French police confirmed Durov has been charged with failing to address the issues of financial and other types of cybercrime on Telegram.
In response to the arrest, Telegram said it respects the European Union's digital laws and dismissed the claims it is opposite as "absurd."
