Brazil's top judge orders nationwide suspension of X30 Aug 2024 23:39
Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes ordered social media giant X to be shut down nationwide within 24 hours after its owner, Elon Musk, failed to appoint a legal representative in the country, a court decision showed on Friday. App stores were told to remove the app within 5 days.
Moraes had already warned Musk on Wednesday night about the potential consequences of not complying with his request to name a representative. Moraes decided to block the platform until it met this requirement. The court added that anyone caught using a VPN to access X will be fined up to $8,874 per day.
The dispute between Moraes and Musk has been ongoing for several months. The conflict initially arose when X refused to comply with legal orders to block specific accounts that were accused of spreading fake news and hate messages. As a further measure, the Supreme Court also froze the bank accounts of Elon Musk's Starlink internet firm.
