British Prime Minister Liz Truss (pictured) reassured on Wednesday that the government was not planning public spending reductions amid inquiries about how it would support its planned tax cuts.
In a weekly parliamentary session, Truss was asked whether she remained committed to the promise that she did not intend to slash public spending. "Absolutely, absolutely," Truss answered. "What we will make sure is that over the medium term, the debt is falling, but we will do that not by cutting public spending but by making sure we spend public money well," concluded.
Later in the session and after being questioned about her role in the government, the British prime minister emphasized that "the last thing" they "need is a general election."

American companies providing semiconductor equipment for Chinese chip makers have started winding down operations in China, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday. The businesses seem to be reacting to the Biden administration's decision to introduce export limits on 31 Chinese tech companies.
According to the report, firms including KLA Corp. and Lam Research Corp. are halting deliveries and support and pulling their staff out of Chinese firms such as Yangtze Memory Technologies Co. The move could have a serious impact on chip production in China, considering the workers from the United States "play a crucial role in operating the factory and developing its manufacturing capabilities, as they bring in expertise on highly technical chip production tools," sources said.

The United Kingdom gross domestic product (GDP) fell 0.3% in August, according to a monthly estimate released by the country's Office for National Statistics (ONS) on Wednesday.
According to the report, the production sector contributed most to the contraction as it declined 1.8%. Services were down 0.1% in August while construction grew by 0.4%.
On a quarterly basis, the UK economy also contracted by 0.3% in the three months to August compared to the three months to May with production dropping 1.5%.
