Legal & General’s share price took a significant hit after the LDI-market problems emerged, although it had struggled to gain altitude since the start of the year. Part of the reason might be L&G's status as a systemically important asset manager on behalf of institutional clients. At the last results, assets under management had fallen despite strong flows, which naturally affects the fee levels that the division earns. Client interest has mainly concentrated on passive investment strategies such as exchange traded funds, while management also noted a rise in the cost ratio to 59 per cent. Fundamentally, markets are cyclical, and they will affect a business like Legal & General’s in different ways, but investors are still expecting a worse fall in written premiums than has so far emerged.

Besides, the argument for Legal & General's shares comes down to their current bargain-basement rating of a price/earnings ratio of under seven. That makes it the lowest rated of its European peers despite having a claimed return on equity of 19 per cent, which makes it the second-best performing life insurer in the market in terms of profitability. On that basis, the discount that has been applied to its shares appears unwarranted and, until its profitability starts to move the dial on its share price, the dividend yield on offer will have to do the heavy lifting. Buy.

Major stock markets in the United States skyrocketed at Thursday's closing bell, amid easing concerns among investors prompted by the continuous decline of the annual inflation figures over the past months.
Ahead of today's trading session, the Labor Statistics Bureau confirmed the October CPI at a lower-than-expected 7.7%, with the figure dropping for the fourth consecutive month pulled by the Federal Reserve's strong rate hikes.
Following the data, several senior Fed officials suggested the pace of the interest rate increases could slow down as soon as next month from the previous 75-basis-point hikes. Both the pound and the euro surged against the dollar in response to the latest inflation reading.
The Dow Jones jumped 3.66% or 1,194 points. The Nasdaq 100 climbed 7.49% or 808 points. The S&P 500 advanced 5.53% or 207 points.
