wrong Brexit......
Simon Wolfson, the Brexit-backing boss of Next, is disappointed. The Brexit we got is “not the Brexit that I wanted”, the Tory peer said. There’s a lot of disappointment around at the moment. Tory MP George Eustice, the former environment secretary, admitted that the post-Brexit trade deal with Australia is not the trade deal he wanted. The agreement is “not actually very good” and “gave away far too much”, said the despondent ex-minister. Meanwhile, chancellor Jeremy Hunt is set to deliver a Budget he does not want to give – preparing to announce major spending cuts ahead. Could Brexit be to blame for the return of austerity? Michael Saunders, former Bank of England policy chief, believes so. “If we hadn’t had Brexit, we probably wouldn’t be talking about an austerity Budget this week,” he said – adding that the fateful decision to leave the EU had “significantly” hit the UK’s growth. Rishi Sunak does not agree. The prime minister blamed Covid and Russia for the nation’s economic woes. But Sunak appeared to concede there was little chance of a UK-US trade agreement to help boost growth. After meeting Joe Biden at the G20, the PM all but conceded there was no chance of a transatlantic deal before the next general election.
