United States House Representative Kevin McCarthy may have secured enough votes to become House speaker, US media reported on Friday. After 13 ballots with no candidate reaching the required majority, the Republican may have persuaded enough lawmakers to change their vote.
Unnamed insiders told Politico that McCarthy is expecting Representatives Wesley Hunt and Ken Buck to vote for him and Eli Crane and Matt Rosendale to vote "present," meaning to abstain, instead of voting against him. McCarthy has made a number of concessions to the Republicans who opposed him, including holding votes on a number of conservative bills, putting members of the Freedom Caucus on key committees, as well as tying debt ceiling increases with spending cuts. He also agreed that any House member could table a no-confidence vote in the speaker.
