New figures reveal post-Brexit closures, as bonfire of EU laws amounts to ‘thin gruel’

Pity poor Wetherspoon boss Tim Martin. He once fantasised about Brexit bringing a free-wheeling economy where food and drink would be magically cheaper. But as the dream turned to dust – and Wetherspoon pubs began to close across the land – even Martin admitted Brexit was “not nirvana” after all. The Independent revealed this week that around 4,600 pubs, clubs, hotels and restaurant have closed over the past year (compared to just 678 the previous year). Hospitality bosses are blaming the post-Brexit recruitment crisis, with the desertion of EU labour cited again and again. The promise that Brexit would bid up the wages of low-skilled British workers is not the only thing which hasn’t worked out. Rishi Sunak’s government admitted the “bonfire” of EU legislation has failed to catch fire. Business and trade secretary Kemi Badenoch told Brexiteer Tories this week that only 800 of around 4,000 laws are expected to be scrapped by the end of this year. Jacob Rees-Mogg complained of “thin gruel”. If things carry on as they are, thin gruel may soon be on the menu at your local Wetherspoon.

The UK has diverse gas supplies with connections with Norway and other European countries and a number of LNG import terminals. However, it still has some of the lowest levels of gas storage in Europe at 9 days, compared to Germany at 89 days, France at 103 days and the Netherlands at 123 days. The flexibility in Rough allows cheaper gas to be stored ready for winter, helping to reduce or stabilise costs for UK energy consumers.

Centrica Group Chief Executive, Chris O’Shea, said “I’m delighted that we have managed to return Rough to storage operations for this winter following a substantial investment in engineering modifications. Our long-term aim remains to turn the Rough field into the world’s biggest methane and hydrogen storage facility, bolstering the UK’s energy security, delivering a net zero electricity system by 2035, decarbonising the UK’s industrial clusters, such as the Humber region by 2040, and helping the UK economy by returning to being a net exporter of energy.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Finland on Wednesday for the Nordic-Ukrainian Summit, the office of Finnish President Sauli Niinisto said. The summit will also be attended by the prime ministers of Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland.
"The summit will discuss the situation of Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine, the Nordic countries’ continued support for Ukraine, the developments in Ukraine’s relationship with EU and NATO and Ukraine’s initiative for a just peace," Niinisto's office said in a statement.

I bargepoled this share here in 2015, and Graham confirmed his negative view in 2017 here. We haven't seen any reason to trouble you with any updates until now. PHC has made multi-million losses every year since, and the share count has tripled. FY 12/2022 results show revenues up, but continuing heavy losses. There was $5.7m net cash remaining, so no immediate worries over solvency (going concern note is clean), although the clock is ticking. Accumulated losses are now close to $100m!

Today it announces a consultation on whether to maintain its AIM listing. Management doesn’t take any responsibility for years of losses, instead blaming AIM for its lowly share price (I’d actually say the share price is generous!). 4 major shareholders own 50%, along with poor financial performance for years, so I’d say the de-listing and dilution risks are now very high, hence safest to steer well clear, in Paul’s opinion.
