Annual inflation in Spain stood at 1.9% in June, down from 3.2% in the previous month, the National Statistics Office revealed on Thursday in its preliminary report. The result represents the weakest pace of inflation in over two years and is below the 2% mark targeted by the European Central Bank.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose by 0.6% while consumer prices, excluding food and energy, stood at 5.9% year-on-year and advanced 0.6% from May.

The report finally pointed out that the evolution in the results was primarily due to the fact that during the reported month, the increase in the prices of fuel, electricity and food and non-alcoholic beverages was lower than that of the previous month.

Could the spate of mysterious killer whale boat attacks be spreading beyond Gibraltar?

A pod of orcas and their suspected ringleader, a matriarch named Gladis, are gaining increasing notoriety for repeatedly ramming into boats in the Strait of Gibraltar, conjuring somewhat romantic images of a long-overdue fightback by the natural world.

While the reality is far murkier, what is clear is that killer whales have been interacting with human vessels to an extent not previously reported, at times with terrifying consequences.

In one of several harrowing encounters, a sailing yacht named Alboran Champagne sank as its crew watched on from lifeboats, after damage inflicted by multiple orcas ramming into the vessel miles from the Spanish coastline caused it to flood.

That was one of at least 20 interactions last month alone, in a phenomenon that has perplexed scientists since boats first began to report orchestrated “sledgehammer”-like treatment by killer whales in the region in July 2020.

Russian Army General and Commander of the Aerospace Forces Sergey Surovikin (pictured) has been arrested, The Moscow Times reported on Wednesday, citing two unnamed sources close to the Russian Defense Ministry.

The arrest was reportedly carried out in connection with the failed mutiny by the Wagner Group private military and its leader Yevgeny Prigozhin. According to the report, Surovikin has not been seen in public since Saturday, June 24, when he called on Wagner to withdraw from Russia.

Surovikin was the military leader of Russian forces in Ukraine from October 2022 to January 2023, when he was replaced by Army General Valery Gerasimov, who was often a target of fierce criticism by Prigozhin.

Matt Hanco-ck has admitted that the UK was not properly prepared for the Covid pandemic – claiming officials were more concerned with counting bodybags than preventing the spread of the virus.

Speaking at the Covid inquiry on Tuesday, the former health secretary described the failure to plan as an “absolute tragedy” and repeatedly insisted that the government’s approach had been “completely wrong”.

He conceded that pre-pandemic plans to protect care homes had been “terrible”, saying the care sector was in “nowhere near good enough shape” when Covid struck.

Mr Hanco-ck also revealed that the UK came “within hours” of running out of vital medicines for intensive care units at the height of the pandemic – but said that the planning that had been undertaken in preparation for a no-deal Brexit meant hospitals were able to cope.

It came as Mr Hanco-ck:

Attacked planning that revolved around finding “enough bodybags” and “burying the dead”

Admitted he had not attended any National Security Committee meetings on emergency planning

Said he “wasn’t enthusiastic” about no-deal Brexit robbing resources from health planning

Turned to victims’ families in the gallery to tell them he was “profoundly sorry”

Was heckled as he left the inquiry, with the bereaved shouting “Killer” and “How many have died?”

Banks have questions to answer about how quickly interest rate rises are being passed to savers, a Cabinet minister has said.

Work and Pensions Secretary Mel Stride acknowledged there are “questions to be asked” after months of the Bank of England steadily increasing interest rates in a bid to tackle inflation.

The Bank last week raised interest rates from 4.5% to 5%, triggering fresh misery for struggling mortgage holders.
