I put the cash from my pension lump sum in at 105 in 2012 after seeing how much time the young guys I worked with spent gambling on line. Never have myself - except for this of course!
I could have made a lot more by trading in and out - if I'd got it right - but I'm waiting for £20 to see the grand spogs off to a good start.

Those small trades are, as you say, not worth the effort but can be code to other MM's as to how the price should move or their current holding position.
Google it.

Because bitcoin and gold can fall several percent overnight where as with negative rates it's a tiny percentage over a year.

I'm so long in the tooth that closing my mouth is becomming a problem.
Just scanned some of the comments here and, if I may, I'd say some are becomming a little bit irrational and stand a chance of loosing the farm if this goes t*ts up.
Saw the same thing happen with GPSS when gold ran up in August, lots of burnt fingers with that one.
Calm down dear!

To judge by the sold/bought ratio today many small investors who have been stressing over losses for months are taking the opportunity to jump ship with whatever profit is available.

Unless anyone has another explanation?

Shareseeker - same advantage as buying goldminers over gold, miners have fixed costs so any price increase goes straight to bottom line profits.
gold price - $1500 - cost of production £1000 - profit $500 an ounce
gold price - $2000 - cost of product unaltered - profit $1000 an ounce.

Don't think there is a definitive answer to that.
Sometimes one bid will flush out another higher one, but not always.
The old maxim is that it's never wrong to take a profit so if you have one then you're in a good place. Consider how much more there is in it if you wait and whether if meanwhile while you wait for the payment the money might do better
elsewhere.
My own experience leads me to favour the bird in the hand method.

Poptimist, do you have an explanation as to why MMs wouldn't want to sell any shares they hold at the best price they can get?
If the price isn't moving up could it be just because buyers won't pay?

Checking prices multiple times a day will achieve nothing but high blood pressure!

I should say HL are offering quotes, not just showing, and I could get a firm quote for both
