Perfect in the real world. A kick in water base mud applies no matter what depth. In oil base mud the gas hides till bubble point usually very close to surface.Water does not expand no matter what pressure. If you have a gas influx in WBM of 10 barrels you will see that immediately. In OBM you will not.

It will hide as the molecules combine and then bubble point. Usually about 1000 feet from the BOP. Not a lot of time to react.

Thank you. I just try to educate. Top hole North Sea was drilled with water based. As a derrickman change over to oil base. Clean the pits. Next well clean the OBM and dump in North Sea. I do not mind as I was an Instructor at Aberdeen Drilling School. Had some great people through there and some real arrogant arseholes. Put in places at times. Ended up drilling HPHT wells in the world after Macondo. I enjoyed teaching. A few kicks on HPHT and the respect I got from all as town said we will do this. OH no we wont. LOL

This was never meant to create this uncertainty. An Observation was asked for and gave an opinion. All this is per normal drilling a well with OBM. There is no oil pouring over the shakers. The guy said we recirculate the mud. It is NOT oil.

Oil base mud is needed to drill any hole like this. Horizontal makes it slicker. Any clays will not swell with it.

I did not infer any of that. Look at the pipe in the derrick in the background. They pick up enough pipe to drill the hole with a top drive picking up as you saw.

There is plenty of pipe in that video to drill to TD. Despite all the films the only time you see oil at surface is when you have a BIG problem. The well is maintained using the weight of mud. The cuttings will have traces of oil. If the gas increases whilst drilling you raise the mud weight. The best way to show gas increase is every stand drilled we have to shut the mud pumps off to connect the next 93 feet of pipe. So the pressure of the new area drilled is not under the pressure of the mud pumps. That is called ECD. So when the connection is made and the pumps are switched back on if anything came in with no external pressure on it will move up the hole. We know how many pump strokes it takes to move the mud from bottom to the drill floor. If a gas peak hits say 10% gas we need to raise mud weight as it will get worse.

This has nothing to do with Megrez! The mud on show was OBM. Loved drilling with it. You can tell by the colour and the steam coming off it.

Megrez was drilled with OBM. Get a grip. All of the North sea was drilled using it. WBM to start with and then OBM. Do at least some research.

What do you mean? That is oil base mud as opposed to water based mud. The obm is synthetic. It is slicker and does not react with clays. Do some research before contradicting me.

They are only going for a look at the bottom. Not priority. There will be no news on that for weeks. PRIORITY is the lateral.
