It's true that your holding is diluted if you do not take up your rights, and it's true that it costs you money if you do take them up.
But there is often a third option - "tail swallowing." Under this, you sell enough of the rights to raise the cash to take up the rest.
This costs you, but not so much, and it also dilutes you, but not so much. It's also called a cashless takeup.
