Russian article "Georgia: between the American hammer and the anvil of the Russian Federation"
A passing reference to FRR but lots on USA / Georgia relations, complaints from senators etc
Pt.1
"The unexpected attacks of the USA and the “scandalous” participation of the Russian delegation in the PACE event in Tbilisi threaten the country with complete chaos and loss of sovereignty.
Georgia is very proud of its independence and "unprecedented" partnership with the United States, but, as it turned out, the first is fictitious, and the second is dubious. Tbilisi cannot take a step without Washington’s permission, and disobeying it, it gets it “under the breath”. Why are there only angry letters from American politicians to Georgian Prime Minister Georgy Gakharia - in two months, as many as six messages with a variety of claims.
Interestingly, their authors are actually “lobbyists of Georgia,” which did not stop them from attacking the Georgian Dream party. The name of its creator, billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili, in a critical aspect, also sounded during a speech in the House of Representatives of Congressman Pete Olson - for "pressure" on the American company Frontera Resources, which for many years "searched" for oil and gas in Georgia, spreading information about "large deposits" . Olson said that "the oligarch ... attacked foreign investors, violating the rights and freedoms of citizens." In general, Ivanishvili is the main target, which means that “lobbyists” want a change of power in the republic, while also pursuing their narrow goals. One of the “goals” is the port of Anaklia, located within walking distance from Abkhazia, where the military bases of the Russian Federation are located. Anaklia Development Consortium was founded by TBC Holding, whose shareholders are banker Mamuka Khazaradze and American Conti International LLC. However, Conti left him in August, and the Georgian government terminated the agreement with the “constantly non-performing financial obligations” consortium. Khazaradze, in response to the authorities, created the opposition Lelo party.
However, even before the congressmen's epistolary activity, the ex-curator of the State Department for Georgia, Matthew Bryza. stated that the port of Anaklia could have a huge impact on the prospect of Georgia joining NATO and its aspiration to the European Union. Moreover, the “Russian theme” in the context of its construction sounded like a key one. “If the Anaklia project fails, it will be a sign that Georgia does not have real, but ephemeral independence, that you are a quasi-sovereign state,” Bryza said.
