UK and Harland & Wolff) welcomed 150+ local and international suppliers to Bristol for the second Fleet Solid Support Meet the Buyer event of the week.

This was a fantastic opportunity to outline the Procurement process for the Fleet Solid Support Programme and gave suppliers a chance to speak to representatives from Harland & Wolff and Navantia UK before Navantia UK Chairman Sir Alan Massey closing speech.

These events represent a chance to understand more about the capabilities and competencies on our doorstep and strengthen our supply chain as well as building positive relationships with the community.

Nick Sharpe, director of communications at Scottish Renewables, commented on the announcement: “ScotWind is set to transform the energy landscape in Scotland, so it is encouraging to see the West of Orkney Wind Farm become the first project from last year’s leasing round to enter the consenting process.

“Plans are in place for over 27GW of new offshore wind capacity – equivalent to 13 more West of Orkney projects - to be built over the next decade, and obtaining consent is just one of the many steps each of those schemes will have to take before these wind farms can start powering our net-zero future.

“Consenting offshore wind farms is a complex process and the Scottish Government now needs to ensure its agencies have the right skills and capacity in place so that decisions can be made on this project, and others which follow, at the pace needed to tackle the climate emergency.”

The event gave suppliers a chance to speak to representatives from Harland & Wolff and@NavantiaOficial

Natasha Brown and Lia Newcomb spoke with local industry members about broader opportunities within Harland & Wolff and how we can share knowledge and best practice as well as supporting Small Medium Enterprises in Northern Ireland.

It's been a fantastic week of political engagement for Harland & Wolff in Belfast and at Conservative Party Conference. There's been so much interest and support for what the brilliant team of people here are doing to help rejuvenate UK shipbuilding and marine engineering.

From supporting energy security, to levelling up, to enabling decarbonisation, to delivering the National Shipbuilding Strategy, so many partners in government understand the role both H&W and the wider sector can play in realising our national objectives.

It was social value, though, that really cut through. The impact our yards have on their communities is so important. Whether that's the 75 new apprentices that started with H&W this autumn or the £77m investment in shipyard technology and infrastructure being unlocked in Belfast and Appledore thanks to the FSS programme, we are creating lasting impact and a real future for so many. These investments in people and infrastructure will make H&W match fit for future orders across our target markets. That's the power of smart procurement - not just jobs today, but long-term competitiveness, opportunity and security for our teams and their communities.
