Wind turbine manufacturer Vestas coming to Scotland, says energy minister. Danish firm said in November it was considering Scotland for 1,000-employee factory. Vestas, the wind turbine manufacturing giant, is coming to the Port of Leith according to Scotland’s energy minister. Gillian Martin made the comments during a live podcast recording in Aberdeen to an audience of 300 people on Tuesday evening. Vestas (CPH: VWS), which was not immediately reachable for comment, has been honing in on Scotland for a new factory. Queried by an audience member about a lack of domestic manufacturing for Scotland’s energy transition industries, Gillian Martin discussed investment coming in, and pointed to the Danish wind giant heading to the Central Belt.

While the announcement did not reveal any details on the third SIM project being progressed to stage 2, the Scottish Government has previously hinted at wind turbine manufacturer Vestas establishing itself in Scotland.

Another technology that could well prove to be critical in the energy storage space is hydrogen. “By 2035 we will need to have 8TWh of large-scale hydrogen storage and currently we have less than 1TWh. We will need to see an eight-fold increase from now,” Winser said.

Hydrogen, particularly green hydrogen, could be vital in decarbonising the GB market, particularly through its potential as an energy storage vector. One of the key methods in large-scale hydrogen storage is salt cavern storage. These natural geographical formations have been referenced as a means to store utility-scale hydrogen to be extracted when there is a spike in demand.

“Salt caverns and depleted oil and gas reservoirs could be used for hydrogen storage. With the time it takes to develop these, we need to get on with this very quickly,” Winser said.

The final significant point mentioned by Winser in his opening remarks was the need to establish a strategic energy reserve to ensure that the UK energy sector is protected from the impacts of international events, such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

On the topic, Winser said: “We need to establish strategic energy reserve to supply 25TWh of electricity by 2040. The most likely form of this would be hydrogen, whereas in the short-term, it will be to store methane.”

Referencing GB, but NI/RoI face similiar issues. IM salt caverns can be used to transition from gas to hydrogen or hydrogen directly.

Acharacle Community Council has put forward a vote of no confidence in Highland Council’s "flawed" plan to replace the Corran Ferry.

The survey undertaken by the six community councils showed results in favour of a fixed link bridge or tunnel in the long term and overwhelming comments for a new diesel ferry now. THC hasn’t even acknowledged the results of the survey.

"The residents of the peninsula have suffered financially and mentally during 2023 when both the MV Corran and the MV Maid were out of service during critical times of the year. It will take a lot of families and businesses a long time to recover, if they ever will.

"The communities are sickened by the lack of empathy or willingness by THC to re-strategize and address the immediate short to medium solution to purchase a new diesel ferry at a cost of £12m-£15m and could be in service in 18 months."

Highland Council says it will be replying to the letter directly.
